Classic Line! haha! My Lolo just turned 93 this last Saturday (May 28). Oh yeah! He’s still strong even though he’s always saying that he’s weak. He really likes to relive his good ol’ days and tell stories about him. That’s one of his hobbies. To tell amazing stories about his experiences. My Tita and I are thinking of a project about filming my Lolo while he talks about his stories. Some kind of a memorabilia. That sounds feasible.
Happy 93rd Birthday Lolo!
Of course birthday = food. And lots of it. My cousins from Balanga, Bataan brought most of the food. Puto’t kutsinta with niyog (of course), menudo, fried chicken, kare-kare with bagoong, pancit (for long life!), watermelon and of course the chocolate cake from Goldilocks with the number 9 and 3 on top.
The family singing Lolo a Happy Birthday! :)
It was a fun day! Lots of bonding time with the cousins and a lot of eating. haha! I know my Lolo won’t read this but I just want to tell him again Happy Birthday and may you still live a long and happy life! I love you Lolo!! :)
Last Sunday, my sister and I had some bonding time. She just got her bonus and she said she’ll treat me in Yakimix. Buffet = instant yes. kthxbai. haha! We decided to go to Yakimix Greenbelt 3 because she hasn’t seen the place. I went there last December 2010 with my friends in our Christmas party.
We arrived there a little bit early because Yakimix was still closed so we just reserved a table. We had some time to kill so we first decided to buy a router then my sister wanted to visit the newly opened Forever 21 store in SM Makati.
We hunted for the router first and successfully bought it at Octagon in Parksquare 1. After that, I was okay with the plan to go to Forever 21 so I decided to accompany my sister in there. At first I was like, “okay.. keep looking at clothes… I look like a bodyguard here… Check if there’s wi-fi… Nope.. Just keep walking.. Check out some chicks… Damn girl! That dress ain’t pretty on you! *snap* *snap*… okay, I’m hungry..”
Interior of Yakimix GB3
I didn’t eat lunch that time because I was busy doing some work and not purposely starving myself. Just to be clear. Okay… I’m being defensive here. Please continue reading… When hunger strikes, I get pissed off easily. So after several more minutes walking around the shop, I was like a kid whining and asking my sis to leave and go to Yakimix already. I know you’re reading this Ate, sorry about that! hehe.
Anyway, it’s already around 5:30 PM that time and I know that Yakimix can really fill up fast. And I was right. When we finally went there, our name was already skipped on the reservation list but luckily, we were first on the waiting list. It was not a long wait though. After 5 minutes, we were already seated in a large table big enough for six persons. The feast begins.
My own sushi platter
I skipped the appetizers because I was really hungry. I made my own sushi platter. Of course, I shared some of this to my sister. There were a lot of choices of sushi and I can’t remember all of the names. All I know is the orange sushi is California Maki and the yellow ones below it are Tamago.
I just know some of the dishes in this plate. Egg foo young, baked tahong, lechon kawali, canton noodles(?). The green colored dish was veggies, on the right of that was chicken and beside that was a pork dish. I was already full by this time and also my tummy was not feeling good earlier that day so this was my last plate.
After eating, I was looking around and one young girl was holding her tummy. She looks like she was either about to cry, puke, sh*t herself or all of the above. I think she was too full. I want to tell her, ”You must learn the art of pacing, Young Grasshopper.. and learn how to stop if you are full.”
Prices of Yakimix
The verdict: The food selection were still not that many but the place is really good. It was really spacious and it looks elegant. There were also a lot of visitors in the resto since the staff keeps shouting “Irasshaimase!” every time guests arrive. The way they do this is one staff leading the guests will shout first and the other staff follows. I wanted to shout ”Irasshaimase!” and see if they would respond. haha!
I highly suggest to try out Yakimix if you’re looking for a buffet place. It’s not that expensive and the dishes are really worth it. They serve Korean, Japanese and Cantonese cuisines.
Here’s an article that may help when you attend a formal occasion next time. We should know what to do when faced with many utensils, the way to eat in a buffet set-up, what to do with fish bones, etc.
Check out this article about restaurants in Aguirre Street in BF Homes. I haven’t been to any of these restaurants except Serenitea. Not really a milk tea fan but it’s okay. I haven’t tried their snacks yet though so I’ll give it another shot.
Anyway, have you been to any of these restos? Twenty One Plates, Pito & Mita and Raaz Mahal. The food sounds amazing. Is it also amazing in person?
I think we should plan a food trip for the South! You know we love food trips! What other places should we check out there?
I’m really a night owl but my home-based work right now has turned me into a morning person. I have to wake up and be online by 7 AM. That’s way too early for me! To get through the early call time, usually I just drink coffee and just munch on some crackers. But I want something else when I woke up one morning. I want Cello’s Doughnuts.
I was really planning to buy from Cello’s the day before. I was suppose to withdraw money from the ATM to buy the doughnuts but the machine was out of service. I promised to myself that I have to buy it the next morning. And I did.
Box of 6
For those not familiar with Cello’s Doughnuts & Dips, the Taft branch is located at Burgundy across DLSU’s Northgate. You can easily spot the place by its orange logo and it’s also right beside Bench Fix. Obviously they sell doughnuts but the unique thing about this place is you can buy a dip for the doughnuts. For the dips, they have Toblerone, Nutella, Dark Belgian Chocolate, and Dulce de Leche.
I wanted to buy the Box of 15 but it was not available so I just bought the Box of 6 (P165) and chose the flavors that looks really yummy. I was planning to buy their Nutella dip but I forgot about it! I’ll just get the dip next time I visit them again. Have you tried their doughnuts with the dip? How was it?
I forgot when was the last time I ate a Cello’s doughnut so I forgot what it taste like. I chose to eat first the Oreo doughnut since it was one of the best sellers. The doughnut was really light and the sweetness was just right. It was gone after a minute! The second choice was Chocolate which is “deep fried to perfection and topped with premium chocolate glaze.” For those who’ve been reading my blog for awhile now, they would know that I’m a chocolate lover. I think the glaze was a bit thin but I still enjoyed it.
My sister has been craving these doughnuts ever since we moved to our new place. She’s a former Scholastican but she never had a Cello’s doughnut before. Since I wanted to taste the other flavors, I just bit half of each remaining doughnuts. The doughnuts were a bunch of letter C’s when my sister found them. haha!
Cello’s products and prices
I’m sure I would go back and try the other flavors and dips. For more info, check out their website at www.cellosdoughnuts.com.
One night, me and my sister were suddenly craving for pizza. We searched all over the internet about the latest promos of pizza joints around the metro. We ended up ordering the Summer Pizza Madness Buy 1 Take 1 Promo by Greenwich. Which I already ordered back in Olongapo with my mom. For more info about the Summer Pizza Madness promo, check out my post here.
We ordered a Side Sampler (P163) and the Family sized Greenwich Special Overload Pizza to get a free Classic Hawaiian Pizza (P483).
Side Sampler - Onion Rings, Pizza Fries, Buffalo Wings with Blue Cheese Ranch Dip
Greenwich Special Overload Pizza - Pepperoni, beef, spiced ham, pineapple, mushroom, onion and green bell pepper
Free Classic Hawaiian Pizza - spiced ham and pineapple
I’m suddenly missing CSB’s library or the so called Learning Resource Center (LRC) for us Benildeans. I think one of the most neglected facility in our school is the library. We have a total of three libraries: the one in the main building (LRC-Main and Extension), the one in SDA and the one in AKIC. I haven’t been to the LRC-AKIC but I think the biggest would be the LRC-SDA.
Students should maximize these facilities because it’s part of what they are paying. “As of January 2011, the LRC users can avail of a collection of over 140,000 book titles…” (Source: here) That’s a lot of books.

While searching OPAC (On-line Public Access Catalog), I found books that I would like to borrow once I get back.
Digital Food Photography by Lou Manna
I’ve read this before and it really helped in my food photography. The book also covered how a food photographer works with other people, how to compose and light food, and many more. You can check out the contents and the reviews of this book here.
Food Photography and Styling by John Carafoli
I haven’t read it yet but it looks promising even though it was published back in 1992. In one of the sites that I saw this book being suggested, they said that “This is the essential reference book that gives specific instructions on how to create mouthwatering images of all types of food and special effects.”
Food Styling For Photographers: A Guide to Creating Your Own Appetizing Art by Linda Bellingham Jean Ann Bybee, with Brad G. Rogers.
As you can see in the book cover, it is the process of styling ice cream. Trivia: Sometimes, they use mashed potato for the the ice cream and Elmer’s glue for the drippings. This book covers the instructions on how to shoot cold beverages, salads, pasta and sauces, burgers, sandwiches, ice creams, and many more. There’s an e-book version of it somewhere in the internet and if you’re lazy to find it, I’ll just email it to you. Just message me here.
A found a lot more books that I want to borrow but these are the top three books I want to read right away. I think I know where I’m going on the first day of school. So kids, visit the library in your school and read, read, read!
Whenever I go home to Olongapo (my hometown), I gain weight. Why? This is my routine when I go home there: Wake up, eat breakfast, surf the net and work, eat lunch, surf the net and work, eat merienda, surf the net or watch TV, eat dinner, surf the net or watch some series, sleep. Repeat the next day. Basically, whenever I’m hungry, I just go to the kitchen and whip something up or buy something from the sari-sari store. In this instance, we had something delivered.
My mom just woke up from her afternoon nap and she was asking what’s for merienda. I said I would treat her pizza since I was craving for some. There is not a lot of pizza choices in Olongapo. There’s Yellow Cab, Shakey’s, Greenwich and other local pizza joints. But my mom said she wanted Greenwich. I went to their website and I saw the promo below. Jackpot!
I reread the promo and saw the fine print that the promo is up to April 15 only. *sigh* Still, I ordered a Rolled-Edge Thick Family Size Ultimate Hawaiian Overload pizza, Big Time Lunch A (Chicken with Rice and Spaghetti) for my mom, Pizza Fries, and a Buko Pandan Tropicooler for me.
I called up the orders and after 40+ mins, the food came. I was surprised when two boxes of pizza where pulled out from the delivery compartment. I thought there was mix up but the delivery dude said that it was the free pizza. The promo was still on! Yey! More pizza!
Ultimate Hawaiian Overload
Free Classic Hawaiian Pizza
The promo is until May 31! So if you’re craving for some pizza, you know where to call.
(Just a disclaimer, I’m not connected to Greenwich in anyway. But they should pay me noh? haha! I just love this promo!)
For Mother’s Day, my sister and I decided to treat our mom in Texas Joe’s House of Ribs in Subic. The best ribs in Subic!
The red bricks of Texas Joe’s
Al Fresco Dining Area
All-text temporary menu
It’s really hard to pick what to eat from the menu because it’s just all text and no pictures. For me, the menu is one of the important things in a resto. The customers should see what the food looks like and also it’s one way of whetting your appetite. It’s tiring to read all the text when you’re really hungry. So I suggest to the people of Texas Joe’s… fix your menu please.
My sister ordered the Carolina Combo (P429) which contains two juicy spare ribs and a quarter of hickory-smoked chicken. For the sides, she chose Joe’s Dirty Rice and a Corn Bread Loaf.
More food shots after the jump.
Beef Brisket Dinner
For our mama, we ordered her the Beef Brisket Dinner (P489) which is her favorite in Texas Joe’s. Smoked to perfection Angues Beef Brisket that is served with steamed rice and coleslaw.
Hickory Smoked Ribs (5 Bone)
My order was the Hickory Smoked Ribs - 5 Bone (P549) which is a large order. The ribs is almost half of the plate and their plates are huge! I think each plate is about 10 x 10 inches. I chose Joe’s Dirty Rice and mashed potato as my sides. I think I can compare this ribs to Brian’s Ribs of Casa Verde in Cebu. They have two things in common: both huge and both epic! Although Brian’s Ribs is much cheaper than the Hickory Smoked Ribs.
For dessert, we chose the Brownie Sundae (P99) which is a plate of a warm and chewy chocolate brownie topped with vanilla ice cream drizzled with chocolate syrup. Goodbye diet!
The portion in Texas Joe’s are American servings so go there with an empty stomach but with a large wallet. They have huge plates and huge servings of the meat. The rice portion are a bit small though but the other sides are big enough. If ever you’re in Subic and you already tried Meat Plus, Texas Joe’s is your next destination. It’s located across Scuba Shack near the Boardwalk area.
I know this is already two weeks late but I still want to say this to my mama again, Happy Mother’s Day and I love you!!! :)
I’ve been to New York Pizza Palace a few times and I still can’t get enough of the food and the place. Better bring your family and friends when you visit because the portions are big enough for sharing.
I didn’t ate lunch that day so I ordered the NY Style Cheese Pizza and Fettuccine and I was so full after. I just hope they will add more kinds of pizza in their menu. Also, I hope their delivery will cover the Manila area so I can just call them when I’m craving for New York style pizza.
One day, when my sister was on leave and we were lazy to cook food, we went to Agno. It was her first time there but it was already late so some of the stalls were already closed. For those unfamiliar with Agno, it’s like a food court with cheap eats and it is located just behind DLSU.
Agno was our tambayan before it was renovated. I think Lasallians now call it NAIA. It stands for New and Improved Agno. I miss the old Agno.
Choctea and Bacsilog
Anyway, because I haven’t been to Agno for quite a while, I ordered the classic Bacsilog from Ate Rica’s stall. Then we bought milk teas in Zentea and I ordered an XL Choctea.
This was way back during the first week of April. My mother and I ate at Pancake House (Subic) after shopping for groceries at Royal. We had an early dinner since we’re already out in Subic.
Pancake House Menu cover
Shrimp-Mango Salad Lettuce greens dress with shrimp, ripe mangoes, sliced green chillies and red bell pepper, mixed with pili nuts served with sweet and spicy golden mist dressing
This salad was the best. I really liked the dressing because the mix of the flavors was just the right amount. It was tangy, sweet and a little bit spicy. My mom is not a fan of spicy foods but she liked this salad. Also, it was the start of mango season that’s why I ordered this.
Roast Beef Special Set
This was my mom’s order and I don’t know what’s special about it. My mom also said that she preferred the Shrimp-Mango salad over her side Caesar salad.
Pork Vienna Breaded lean pork, finely sliced, served with rice and coleslaw
